Autumn trek to Mt Shiratori

Mid October should be the best Autumn colour season up in the mountains, but we apparently have a late Autumn this year because of the summer heat. On 23rd Oct, we enjoyed a beautiful trek to Mt Shiratori where one of the “Heike” clan was thought to have settled down in around the beginning of 13th century after they were defeated by their rival Samurai clan “Genji”. It takes around 30 minutes to get to the trail head from Momigi by car and the trek is an easy and comfortable walking on the mountain ridge. Unfortunately it was a rainy day though, the trek offered us some beautiful leaves in the fog. Our goal was “Miike” and “Byoubu Iwa”, very sacred place for the locals and even trekkers. On a sunny day, this trek offers some beautiful landscape and flowers, you should try this some day with me.

October Tour in Kagoshima

It’s been a while, since I updated the blog. I was doing good, on tours to Kumamoto, Aso, Amakusa, Gokanosho and so on. Just didn’t have a spare time for updating.
Kagoshima is awesome as usual, Sakura-jima volcano has been erupting constantly but the citizens in Kagoshima don’t seem to be bothered by the ashes from the crater, and get along with them as always. It was a round trip starting from “Gajo-en”, a beautiful accommodation known as one of the most “want-to-stay-someday” accommodations in Japan, offers Japanese traditional folk houses as the guestrooms in Kirishima city. We rode a car ferry to cross the sea to Sakura-jima active volcano to see the closer view, then headed for Chiran district to visit Samurai houses and “Tokko peace museum”. You can learn why those Kamikaze pilots devoted themselves to destroy US battle ships in order to defend their homeland, in this museum. Rest in peace.

Tour in Kagoshima

Kagoshima is located in the southernmost on Kyushu island,

known for a birth place of “Mr Saigo”, the leader of “The Last Samurai” rebellion, active volcano “Sakura-jima” erupting constantly near the city of Kagoshima, “Kuro Buta” black pork eaten as Shabu-Shabu etc., “Tori-sashi” sashimi (raw meat) of chicken and so on. This time I visited “Mt Kaimon (開聞岳)” located in the very southernmost edge of Kyushu island, “JR Nishi-Oyama station”, the southernmost train station of JR (=Japan Railway company), green tea plantation in Chiran district and “Chiran Tokko (Kamikaze) peace museum with guests.

It was a long ride starting from Kagoshima city 9:00 and came back around 18:00. Check out the photos as below!

Landslides

We have had some landslides here in Gokanosho after a downpour. Better not visit here at the moment. But no worries, the pavement will be maintained soon, hopefully within a day. Because the local construction companies are well prepared for working on taking care of it.
We get used to this situation as it happens every year during a rainy season starting around early June and finishing around the middle of July.

Earthquake is over now?

– Three major quakes rocked Kumamoto in 7,000 years –
http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201607100005.html

According to this article, it seems Kumamoto will be safe again soon, at least for the next 120 years or so. This is only about the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. But actually in the south, we still have some after shocks repeatedly, twice a week or so. Though they are no longer that strong, only level 2 – 3 quakes out of 7 of the Japanese earthquake intensity scale.

Regarding the intensity scale of earthquakes, refer to the following link.

Fukuoka – Yatai –

After visiting the Shinto shrine, we got back to hotel to prepare for the next tour. Next one is a night hike to “Yatai”. Why not visit Yatai when you visit Fukuoka! Yatai is a street stall which serves such as Ramen, Oden, Yakitori or their own creative cuisine and so on. They are allowed to open Yatai during the night from 7 pm (occasionally 6 pm) to around 1-2 am (depending on Yatai or situation) along the sidewalk / pavement in a particular zone of some downtown districts in Fukuoka city (refer to the following map). As Yatai is a mobile stall, so it takes a couple of hours to build. It’s everyday! They cannot leave the stall on the street. We left the hotel at 8:30 pm, but if you would like to avoid the hustle and bustle, you should be there until 7 pm.

Fukuoka tour – Dazaifu Shrine –

This is about a guided tour I did for a German family the other day.
After the series of earthquakes we had to reorganise the tour schedule, one day in Fukuoka. That was a really exciting experience for both of me and the guests! After I picked up the guests at Hotel Nikko Fukuoka, we headed for Dazaifu shrine which is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan because the person enshrined at this shrine is the God of STUDIES, whose name is “Sugawara no Michizane. If you try to translate his name into European language, it would be “Michizane de/van/von Sugawara”, for your information. He was a minister who lived in the 8th century in Kyoto, but was kicked out of Kyoto by his rival ministers and clans. He was renowned for his talented skills of hand writing calligraphy knowledge of ancient Chinese philosophy and politics. Many students visit this shrine before they take entrance exams for high school / college / university, and I did it when I was 15 years old before the exams in February, it’s 25 years ago and the God helped me pass the exams, of course I made a lot of efforts.

The access to this shrine should be easy if you take a city express way which runs over the city area. Get off at Dazaifu IC, the shrine is only a few minutes away. Walking through and browsing the shops sitting both both sides of the street, here are local souvenirs of Fukuoka. Their recommendation is “Umegae-mochi”, rice cakes consisting sweet red bean paste inside. The legend says the God who was a minister lived in the end of 8th century, gained his health by eating this when he was sick.

Walking through the shopping street and bridges built over a pond, we got to the shrine building. First thing we needed to do before entering the shrine was purification ritual called “Chouzu / Temizu”, practising an easy motion. At the main shrine building, we prayed for good things in front of the God of studies, this is not only a making wish but also a promise or determination to yourself. It goes like, “I’ll finish that this year”, “I’ll pass the exam, watch me” for example. And then walked around in the shrine area seeing other smaller shrines and beautiful old trees. Two of the camphor trees planted behind the main shrine are called “Meoto Gusu”, meaning “a couple of conjugal camphor trees”, a symbol of good married couples. Japanese visitors tend to take photos in front of these trees in memory of their travel. Other smaller shrines are also fun to visit and see. Each of them has a god enshrined, some of them are family members of Michizane’s

Next time, I will post the rest of this tour on my blog. Hope you check it out.

Trek for peony

In the middle of May, it’s PEONY season!
We have beautiful peony flowers in a wide range of a hill with limestone, somewhere in Mt Shiratori. The trek is not hard, one hour and a half walk on a mountain ridge will take you to this beautiful spot. But as it’s located in a hidden place, so highly recommended to hire a guide.
I’ve got to visit here again this week!
